Do AI Card Grading Apps Work? What a Phone Camera Can See
Do AI card grading apps work? Yes for centering, corners and edges, partly for surface. Here is what a photo misses and why estimates differ from PSA.
AI card grading apps work for the parts of a grade a camera can measure: centering, corners and edges. They work only partly for surface, and not at all for trimming or alterations. Used as a triage tool before paying $25 to $80 per card at PSA, they earn their keep. Used as a substitute for a grade, they do not.
What can a card grading app measure from a photo?
A card grading app can measure centering to within a few percent, and it can see corner wear and edge chipping that is large enough to change pixels. Those three categories account for most of the gap between a PSA 8 and a PSA 10 on a clean modern card, which is why the estimate is often right.
Centering is the easiest. The app finds the four border widths and computes the left-to-right and top-to-bottom ratios. PSA's own tolerances, summarized at CardGrading.app, are 55/45 or better on the front for a 10, 65/35 for a 9 and 70/30 for an 8. A phone photo taken square-on can resolve those differences on a standard 2.5 by 3.5 inch card.
Corners are next. Whitening on a dark-bordered card shows as a bright pixel cluster, and a rounded corner has a visibly different outline from a sharp one. Edges are similar: chipping on a black or blue border reads as a broken line. On white-bordered cards all three are harder, because white wear on a white border produces little contrast, and the estimate gets softer.
What can a phone camera not see?
A phone camera cannot see most surface flaws, cannot detect trimming, and cannot separate a factory print defect from a scratch. Those are the three things that most often turn an app's 10 into a PSA 9, or an app's 9 into a card PSA refuses to grade at all.

Surface is the big one. As the CardPreGrading reference on surface scratches puts it, hairline scratches show only under raking light at the right angle, and they are responsible for about half of the unexpected PSA 9s on cards that look mint to the eye. A flat overhead photo with diffused light, which is exactly what you take to measure centering, is the photo least likely to show a scratch.
Trimming is worse, because it is invisible by design. PSA's grading standards state that it will not grade cards that bear evidence of trimming, re-coloring, restoration or other tampering, and the company's fraud report, summarized by All Vintage Cards, says altered-card submissions rose 108.7% year over year in 2025. Graders catch trimming with calipers, edge inspection and fiber pattern analysis. An app sees a rectangle with sharp edges and calls it a clean card.
Why do app estimates and PSA grades differ by a point?
App estimates and PSA grades most often differ by exactly one point, and the disagreement is usually on surface. The app sees clean centering and four sharp corners and predicts a 10. The grader tilts the card under a lamp, finds a hairline scratch or a print line across the focal area, and writes 9.
That pattern follows from the table above. Centering, corners and edges are measured well by both parties, so they rarely cause a disagreement. Surface is measured well by one party and poorly by the other. PSA's 10 requires no breaks in the surface gloss and no print defects; a 9 permits one minor flaw. The one flaw that the camera missed is the one that separates the two grades.
The direction of the error matters. Apps tend to be optimistic, because the flaws they miss are all flaws that lower a grade. A Reddit user in r/pkmntcgcollections put the optimistic case in September 2022: "I've never received one back with a lower grade than the instagrade." That is a good outcome, but it also tells you which way the estimate leans. Treat an app's 10 as "9 or 10" and an app's 9 as "8 or 9", and the estimate becomes reliable. Are card grading apps legit?
Card grading apps are legitimate for what they claim in the fine print and oversold in what they claim on the store page. The measurements are real. The confidence attached to them, and the accuracy percentages some apps advertise, are the marketing. Nobody can verify an accuracy claim unless the app publishes the cards, the photos and the returned grades.
Reddit's view has been consistent for years. When PSA bought an AI imaging company in 2021, a r/baseballcards commenter predicted that "it'll just end up being a lame app to check centering/size and they'll call it some advanced AI grading." In February 2023 a r/mtgfinance user described the realistic version of the future: an app that gives "a pre-grade for centering and edges. You would only have to send in for surface." That is close to where the category sits in 2026.
The most common practical complaint is about the photo, not the model. A r/PokeGrading poster deciding whether to submit a card wrote in February 2025 that "I've scanned it with grading apps and its coming up as a 9, but its inconsistent since I don't have the best background for a photo." Inconsistent input gives inconsistent output, and most of the accuracy you get from an app is decided before you press the shutter. How should you photograph a card for a reliable read?
Photograph the card raw, flat, square-on and under two diffused lights from the sides, then take a second angled shot for surface. Every one of those choices removes a specific error, and the whole setup costs under $50 with a phone you already own.
- Take the card out of the sleeve and top loader. Plastic reflections read as surface damage, and the sleeve edge can be mistaken for the card edge.
- Put it on a plain white or light grey background. Patterned or dark backgrounds confuse the edge detection that centering depends on.
- Light it from two sides at about 45 degrees, 12 to 18 inches above the card, as the PreGradeCards photo guide recommends. Turn off the flash and stay out of direct sunlight.
- Shoot straight down, with the card filling most of the frame. A tilted phone distorts the borders and shifts the centering result by several percent.
- Take one more shot with the card tilted 10 to 15 degrees toward a single lamp. This is the raking-light shot that reveals scratches and print lines. Look at it yourself; the app may not use it.
- Photograph the back too. PSA measures back centering separately, with a looser 75/25 tolerance for a 10.
- Do not edit, filter or sharpen. Processing changes the pixels the model is measuring.

What does "free" mean for a card grading app?
"Free" in this category almost always means free to download, with the condition estimate or the scan count behind a subscription. Some apps offer a short trial, some offer a handful of free scans, and a few offer free centering only. Read the store listing for the plan structure before you assume the grade is included.
The economics explain the model. Identifying a card and pulling its sold prices costs the developer money on every scan, so unlimited free grading does not last. Are card grading apps worth it?
Card grading apps are worth it for two jobs: deciding which cards to submit, and checking a slab you are about to buy. They are not worth it as a replacement for the grade, because buyers pay for the slab, not the estimate.
The submit-or-not decision is where the money is. PSA's cheapest tier was $24.99 per card at its February 2026 pricing update, with Value at $32.99 and Regular at $79.99. A card that comes back a PSA 8 is often worth less than the fee. An app that reads centering at 70/30 and flags a soft corner tells you not to spend the $25 before you spend it. The second job is quieter. A scanner that reads slab labels can pull the grade and cert number from a PSA, BGS, SGC or CGC holder in one photo, which is how you catch a listing whose title says PSA 10 while the label says 9. AI card grading apps work as a measuring tool for centering, corners and edges, and they miss most surface flaws, all trimming and every print defect. That is why an app's estimate and a PSA grade differ by a point far more often than by two, almost always on surface. Photograph the card raw, flat and under two side lights, read the estimate as a range of one point, and use it to decide what to submit and what to leave raw. The estimate is cheap; the slab is what the buyer pays for.
